A Pinot Noir from the Southern Valleys sub-region of Marlborough. Dark carmine-burgundy in the glass; with dark cherry, cranberry, almond, cloves and a top note of flowering wisteria. A deep ripeness to the fruit and into a voluptuous palate of raspberry, blood orange, plum and elderberry flavours. Tannins are exquisite – svelte and supple but with savoury spice to add interest. Integrated but toasty oak is prevalent, and the acidity lends brightness and drive. Elegant – has the corners rounded to a polish giving a smooth, velveteen edge. At the back of the palate, a balance of sweet and sour is at play – the fruit ripeness, savoury soy and tapenade, and a chocolatey espresso note all entwine with complexity and verve. The finish is long and generous. 94pts.
