From the Seifried family vineyard at Brightwater – Zweigelt is a rare variety in New Zealand (although originally from Austria, and very popular there). Translucent ruby red in the glass, with a richer, deeper, perfume than it looks. Warm, inviting notes of bramble, morello cherry, red liquorice, nutmeg and cassis.
Light-medium bodied and intricate on the palate; full of charm with a purity and clarity of fruit – spiced flavours of redcurrant, Campari and boysenberry. Delicacy and depth. A dusting of toasty oak; balanced acidity and a sweet, mellow texture. Just a balm-like welcoming embrace of a wine, and an intriguing characterful alternative to blockbuster ‘big reds’. 92pts.
