Mike Weersing, the maker of this wine recently passed away – the wines now under the Aotearoa New Zealand Fine Wine Estates umbrella, and continue to be created with guidance from Steve Smith MW at their North Canterbury base.
Profound on the nose – the aromas are as the name – a charred cedar, peat and moss, with some lavender, juniper berry, musk and marjoram top notes. Blue fruited, with a dense core of plum, elderberry, dark cherry saturating the palate. Some greenness – nettle, stalk and tomato leaf.
A layer of mineral salinity that is, again, quite earthen, loam, rusty and graphite. Savoury elements of roast beets, pickled mushroom and pot pourri. Sweeter at the end – with chocolate, vanilla, and espresso coming through. Long, lacey and elegant finish. 95pts. Complex and expressive – a wine of great personality.
