A single vineyard wine from the beautiful estate that I visited in Hawke’s Bay this year. The Syrah comes from a small block by the homestead, and this vintage was an epic year. A deep burgundy-carmine red in the glass. The bouquet remains on the side of elegance whilst giving out enticing and complex layers of damson plum, boysenberry, peppercorn, loam, cassis and woody herbal notes. Medium-bodied but well concentrated and blooming well as it opens up. Fine tannins meet a swell of acidity, carrying the palate forward. A touch of savoury appears mid-palate – iron earth, toasted seaweed and a little barrel char. Flowing well, without adding depth or weight, into a finish with harmony and length. Should continue to develop in your cellar. 93pts
