A red blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon from Hawke’s Bay – from a very good vintage which had a long ‘indian summer’ at the end of the harvest. Sealed under cork. A glossy deep garnet red colour in the glass. Merlot leads the way, with the blackberry and plum aromas so typical of the varietal. Notes of blackcurrant and elderberry then follow, with pencil lead, cigar box, violet florals and peppery spices. Dry, but rich and concentrated through the palate, where a fine balance of toasty oak, dusty tannin and acidity combine to give structure to the plush fruit flavours. The glossy texture rounds out the back of the palate, and the finish is succulent and persistent. 93pts
