A Prosecco from Marlborough using the Méthode Traditionnelle and the traditional Glera grape varietal. A small family producer – and new label – from Ben and Helen McLauchlan. A very pale steel-green colour in the glass, and a frisson to the fine mousse of lively bubbles. The bouquet is fresh and zesty, with nashi pear, nougat, green apple, toasted almond, lemongrass, weetbix and orange blossom. A nudge of sweetness on the palate entry puts it into the border of ‘Extra Dry’ and ‘Brut’ in style. Prosecco is light-bodied in expression and often has quite a ‘grape’ flavour compared to most wines. That’s the case on both points here, and is a good thing if we’re looking to assess this New Zealand version. Brimming with energy and crisp, clean flavours – a good start on this journey. 92pts
