A wine from Martinborough – only in tiny quantities, made in the best years. An opaque ruby-garnet mid-depth red in the glass. An effusive volume to the bouquet that is compelling and inviting, as well as a varietal typicity, and even regionally-specific… it smells like great Martinborough Pinot. Bloody, earthy and meaty tones set the tone, with the dense red fruits mingling through. A pulse of acidity highlights that plum, cherry and raspberry fruit, and with the balance of tannin, forms a solid structure – the wine is 14 yers old and in its prime, with just some secondary development and slight browning of the colour. I guess it was quite savoury on release, but that mineral and earthiness is now quite accented and delicious – I’d call it “old world”. A long and broad finish. Certainly amongst the best Pinots I’ve tried from around NZ. 96pts
