Unusually, a wine made from fruit grown in Waikato, at the Estate vineyards by Lake Karapiro. A classic example of Cabernet Franc, with the signature ‘franc funk’ evident on the nose. A dark, garnet red in the glass, with an ashy, smokily aromatic profile. Bramble, anise, plum, cedar and pepper on the nose. I’m loving wines where there is room to explore in the palate – not too overly concentrated and power-packed, but with space, vibrancy and character. Some lovely chalky tannin, and a spicy oak influence, but also showing a delicious savoury edge with tapenade, mocha, crushed herb and cigar box. A smooth, elongated finish. Very nice. 91pts
