From perhaps the best known vineyard in the region, now owned by Giesen, comes this single vineyard expression Pinot Noir. A deep coloured cardinal with a little brick red to the edges. A top note of florals – roses and buddleia, then strawberry, cinnamon and anise. A dense core of savoury, dried autumn leaves and earthiness; but lovely balance – the fruit is sweet and flows with flavours of redcurrant, red cherry, black tea and poached tamarillo.
Also a thread of stalky greenness – a resinous balsam that hints at some whole-bunch complexity. Nicely balanced acidity, finely honed tannins, and a dusting of roasted nutty oak. This has delicacy as well as depth – finely poised but plush and rounded with real staying power.
This rewarded decanting – opening up hours after pouring and becoming welcoming and voluptuous as the night progressed. A sliver left overnight still drinking beautifully the next day. 93pts
