Vidal Legacy Chardonnay 2016

The fruit (clone 15) was sourced from the Kokako and, now sadly defunct, Lyons vineyards and sealed under screwcap.  2016 as a vintage saw a cooler start but ended up with a growing degree days result which was higher than average. The wine spent 12 months in French oak barriques of which 45% were new.

Consistent with its age, the hue is medium gold. Complex aromas of brioche, grilled nuts and peach along with a flinty, peaty reduction on the nose, however this is an attractive addition rather than a detractor. Round, rich and fully matured, but still has lush peach flavours with a touch of lemon zest – reflecting the impact of only partial malolactic fermentation. The palate is rich and mouth-coating, with flavours of peach and nectarine. Still has plenty of vibrant, mouth watering acidity with an extended finish that has a touch of baking spice and nutmeg. With plenty of years still ahead. 94pts
