This gem of the Yarra Valley is a Must-Do on your visit to the region. The location is 314 Maroondah Highway, and this is the Cellar door of <b>Giant Steps<\/b>. Currently open from 11am \u2013 4pm Thursday to Monday and I\u2019d recommend booking as space is limited and the Cellar Door manager takes a great pride in giving time and presence to maximise your visit. It\u2019s a lovely space, with a cute-as-a-button courtyard, and you can choose your spot to settle down to a regional overview tasting ($10) or take a look at the Single Vineyard wines for $20 a tasting. Of course, I did almost all of it &#8211; just for your benefit!<\/p><p>Before you get to the single vineyard wines, Giant Steps do two expressions of \u2018regional\u2019 Chardonnay. The first &#8211; <b>2022 Yarra Valley Chardonnay<\/b> sees about 15% new oak, and sets the tone for what\u2019s to come &#8211; with a crackling acidity, and a balance of stonefruit and citrus flavours with a savoury backbone. The finish is complex, dry and lengthy. The <b>2021 Clay Ferment Chardonnay<\/b> is a more fruity expression, but also showcases a bit of lees-influenced minerality. Both of these have just a nudge of reductive flintiness in the nose and through the palate.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-9543cd0 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"9543cd0\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-b75aaa0\" data-id=\"b75aaa0\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-45112a4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"45112a4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>One of the Single Vineyard wines &#8211; the <b>2021 Sexton Vineyard Chardonnay<\/b> has a unique clone &#8211; Gin Gin &#8211; and has distinctive notes of spicy ginger (not sure if that\u2019s the clone\u2019s signature) and a creamy lemon curd spread across the back of the palate &#8211; with a similar silky texture to boot. Quite weighty and concentrated. <b>2021 Tarraford Vineyard Chardonnay <\/b>is from a cool sloping site, and has a noticeably saline acidity that gives drive and line through the palate and highlights the minerality present. However, the fruit here is well-rounded and quite unctuous &#8211; the most generous example on show so far. A very good wine. My last of the whites &#8211; <b>2021 Wombat Creek Vineyard Chardonnay <\/b>is probably as distinctive as the<b> Sexton<\/b>. It\u2019s quite ethereal, with a perfumed, elegant nose and then a real pop of fruit. Not just in the usual citrus-peach arena, but almost a cranberry, white cherry nibble of red flavours coming through.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-706e583\" data-id=\"706e583\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fc48347 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"fc48347\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"735\" height=\"980\" src=\"https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Giant-Steps-CD-v1-768x1024.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-8447\" alt=\"Giant steps\" srcset=\"https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Giant-Steps-CD-v1-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Giant-Steps-CD-v1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Giant-Steps-CD-v1.jpg 950w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 735px) 100vw, 735px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-5e3e071 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"5e3e071\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-d9ee127\" data-id=\"d9ee127\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ce76c9d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ce76c9d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Trotting over to reds &#8211; which in Yarra will often mean Pinot Noir &#8211; the <b>2022 Yarra Valley Pinot Noir<\/b> shows a lovely whole-bunch winemaking character that\u2019s very appealing. Brightly perfumed and broad on the palate with that mild, stalky, bitter note a good foil to some ripe cherry flavours. <b>2021 Primavera Vineyard Pinot Noir<\/b> is grown on fertile red volcanic soils in the Upper Yarra at Wooli Yarrock. Quite a few savoury flavours bleed through the sweeter fruits &#8211; with tamarillo and rhubarb featuring in my tasting notes. Also, some good use of new oak and a maker who\u2019s not afraid to present some grippy tannin in their Pinot! <b>2021 Sexton Vineyard Pinot Noir<\/b> has tremendous flow through the palate. Just ripe, rounded and generous. A bit more spice than others, and a touch of orange peel in there too.<\/p><p>The last couple of wines that I tasted take us outside the \u2018Chardonnay and Pinot\u2019 combo of the Yarra Valley. First, a wine sourced from Tasmanian fruit &#8211; Tassie being very much on-trend at the moment. <b>2020 Fatal Shore Pinot Noir<\/b> is from Coal River Valley vineyard, next door to Tolpuddle. It starts smoky, with spice, roasted nuts and mocha characters to the perfume. Then quite brooding and dark into the palate &#8211; some lush, dense fruit packed into this one. A final dash on the reds leads to <b>2019 Harry\u2019s Monster<\/b> &#8211; which in various vintages can be a Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon led blend, with some Petit Verdot (in this year as little as 1%). It\u2019s a terrific Bordeaux style red &#8211; cassis, mulberry, espresso, blueberry and cedar get framed by long, chalky tannins and enough oak to give solid structure and balance.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-7253419 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"7253419\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-68a44bb\" data-id=\"68a44bb\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6061749 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"6061749\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"735\" height=\"497\" src=\"https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Giant-Steps-Tarraford-2019-1024x692.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-8137\" alt=\"Giants Steps \u2018Tarraford Vineyard\u2019 Chardonnay 2018\" srcset=\"https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Giant-Steps-Tarraford-2019-1024x692.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Giant-Steps-Tarraford-2019-300x203.jpg 300w, https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Giant-Steps-Tarraford-2019-768x519.jpg 768w, https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Giant-Steps-Tarraford-2019-1536x1039.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Giant-Steps-Tarraford-2019.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 735px) 100vw, 735px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A gorgeous Cellar Door beckons at the end of the main street in Healesville, Victoria.
