After the months when you haven\u2019t felt like leaving the house for fear of being washed away, it\u2019s a lovely thought to think ahead to summer evenings with something light and aromatic in the glass.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>I do love a Pinot Gris &#8211; growing up in Europe, I usually shunned the Italian style and looked to western France for the Alsatian wines &#8211; especially the superb Grand Crus which can age beautifully for decades (in my opinion). I\u2019ve even been known to bang on about this &#8211; ageing beautifully &#8211; about some of the best New Zealand versions, and you\u2019d have to be including today\u2019s contender &#8211; Dry River &#8211; in that list &#8211; probably at the top.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-a655b29 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"a655b29\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-3a77ca1\" data-id=\"3a77ca1\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ad3b9cf elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ad3b9cf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>When Neil and Dawn planted Dry River back in 1979, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc were the first varieties planted, following their ambitions to make Alsace style wines. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay came soon afterwards. Their winemaker, Wilco Lam places huge importance on those aromatic wines (along with Riesling) &#8211; what he calls \u201cthe underdogs\u201d.<\/p><p>The wines in the tasting today have been brought for a reason &#8211; mostly viewed as benchmarks for Dry Rivers own wines. Not just their favourites, but from a production perspective. Where all the producers are farming their vineyards organically, or biodynamically; but they are also a similar size to Dry River &#8211; between twelve and twenty hectares. This is the driest of the first three wines, with around ten grams of residual sugar. The team are starting to pick earlier than in the past, and this shows with a harmony of piercing acidity and tropical ripeness. Dried fruit, rose petal, honey and apricot on the nose. The palate has both distinctive iced biscuit and a lime curd notes. Bright, youthful and classy.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-170319b elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"170319b\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-afb15ba\" data-id=\"afb15ba\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fb0a7da elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"fb0a7da\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"735\" height=\"980\" src=\"https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/glasses-1-768x1024.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-6496\" alt=\"Dry River\" srcset=\"https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/glasses-1-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/glasses-1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/glasses-1.jpg 950w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 735px) 100vw, 735px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-fd13afb elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"fd13afb\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-34a2dc9\" data-id=\"34a2dc9\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0cb3984 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0cb3984\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Then comes a <b>Bott Geyl Grand Cru 2011<\/b> from Sonnenglanz. The oldest vintage of the line-up, across the valley from the Furstentum wine, getting the afternoon sun. This wine has a lovely depth to the palate, a serene beauty. A golden hue in the glass, with that glossy orange quality flowing through to the palate. Rounded and creamy in texture, but with a minerally, pithy dryness to the finish.<\/p><p>The last of the first three is <b>Albert Mann Grand Cru 2017<\/b>, from a steep hillside vineyard in Furstentum. The Alsace wines can harvest later, carrying more residual sugar, richer and with weight in the mid-palate. A little bruised apple, melon and pineapple, with a jasmine floral note on the nose. A ripe, jammy\/marmalade quality to the finish.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-fb1cd35 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"fb1cd35\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-e921258\" data-id=\"e921258\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4fd29a5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4fd29a5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>A second flight gets us right into the big hitters. Grand Cru status comes with restrictions &#8211; around the amount of vines per hectare you can plant, the grape varieties; and with the Rangen de Thann, some extra restrictions such as the requirement to be organic, and a minimum of 6000 vines per hectare &#8211; increasing density.<\/p><p><b>Domaine Zind-Humbrecht Rangen de Thann, Clos Saint-Urbain Grand Cru 2015<\/b> has an amazing richness and dense sweetness matched to a medium acidity. \u2018Pear danish pastry, milk chocolate and fruit cake\u2019 were all in my tasting notes for this one. Great finish &#8211; complete and rounded.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-6f590c9\" data-id=\"6f590c9\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4c1ba85 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"4c1ba85\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"735\" height=\"980\" src=\"https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Alsace-bottles-768x1024.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-6499\" alt=\"Alsace bottles\" srcset=\"https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Alsace-bottles-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Alsace-bottles-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Alsace-bottles.jpg 950w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 735px) 100vw, 735px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-3621bc7 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"3621bc7\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-535142c\" data-id=\"535142c\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b4c57e4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b4c57e4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><b>Domaine Weinbach Altenbourg 2019<\/b> is a young wine, with a tension and balance leading to a denser, plush mid-palate. White cherry, peach melba, pear and satsuma over a creamy beurre blanc texture. Not a Grand Cru, but a classic, powerful Alsace style.<\/p><p>My favourite, the <b>Domaine Ostertag Muenchberg Grand Cru 2017<\/b> is the driest of the afternoon, with around 5 g\/l residual sugar. A dry, super-clean style, but with tons of fresh ripe fruit &#8211; blood orange, cherry and almond butter on the nose. I loved the astringent, peppery, bitter note to this wine. Herbal, with fennel, nettle and even a liquorice element running through it. Excellent.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-7eb6360 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"7eb6360\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-eb6f6cd\" data-id=\"eb6f6cd\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e3c6f5c elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"e3c6f5c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"723\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Ostertag-PG-723x1024.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-6502\" alt=\"Ostertag PG\" srcset=\"https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Ostertag-PG-723x1024.jpg 723w, https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Ostertag-PG-212x300.jpg 212w, https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Ostertag-PG-768x1087.jpg 768w, https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Ostertag-PG.jpg 950w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 723px) 100vw, 723px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-066da21\" data-id=\"066da21\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7d95080 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7d95080\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>At the end of the Pinot Gris we had the opportunity to try the Spring release wines from Dry River &#8211; Chardonnay and Syrah, plus the 2021 Pinot Noir just bottled two weeks ago. The Syrah has now been pulled out, so the 2020 will be the last release. This is looking fabulous, as is the Pinot Noir<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>despite the obvious youth and new bottling.
