Given the opportunity to look at three vintages of this Bordeaux-style red blend, shows the potential for development given some cellaring of what is one of New Zealand\u2019s classic regional wine styles.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-024f0c1 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"024f0c1\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-1a5a32f\" data-id=\"1a5a32f\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-016c047 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"016c047\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Starting with the newest wine \u2013 the\u00a0<strong>2020<\/strong>\u00a0vintage, and current release.<\/p><p>Youthful, lightness of colour \u2013 showing a translucent ruby in the glass. An excellent, aromatic nose with blackberry, cedar, Ribena, bayleaf, plum and lifted florals. No disguising the oak \u2013 toasty and framing the palate. Ripe dark fruit is balanced with a savoury umami note that includes graphite-pencil shavings, tobacco and soy, but also some cocoa and espresso flavours. Tannins are chewy and the acidity is bright, giving nice drive, and nothing seems out of place \u2013 just a little time will benefit the balance. <strong>91pts<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-2745287\" data-id=\"2745287\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c98061d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c98061d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Moving on to the couple of older vintages \u2013 firstly the <strong>2018<\/strong><\/p><p>Dark crimson colour, showing a touch of magenta flashes at the rim. A bold nose, perfumed with blackcurrant, blood orange, cigar box, pepper, plum and vanilla. The Cabernet gives a great structure, cocooning the softer, plush Merlot through a palate that is power-packed and muscular. There\u2019s a nice tart, nettle \u2018green\u2019 note that sets off the lush dark fruits nicely, sitting above the earthy star anise spice, adding a layer of interest and personality. Herbal notes merge with the bloody, dark berry fruits. Damson, red cherry, mint, green peppercorn, marzipan and cassis. Dry, with lovely, soft, tannins showing a distinctive black tea nuance. Firmly concentrated. Savoury and balanced with a roundness and density to both the fruit and the seasoning of peaty oak.
