Or the <em>spirit<\/em> of it? People who take a journey through the \u2018world\u2019 of wine get different things from it. One place, the <strong>Smith &amp; Sheth Studio<\/strong>, and <strong>Cellar door<\/strong> in the centre of Havelock North is a location to talk about and learn more about the pleasure, culture and craft of wine. The experience is a major part of wine tasting. Whether that is a Cellar Door with breathtaking scenery like Domain Thomsen or Brancott, or simply the care and attention of the person taking you through the wines.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-eb92844 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"eb92844\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-05b1879\" data-id=\"05b1879\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f54c5b7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f54c5b7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Smith and Sheth is a family of wines \u2013 including Pyramid Valley and Lowburn Ferry, and lends itself to a journey around New Zealand through wine as well. The way that journey is presented is quite memorable \u2013 a definite \u2018experience\u2019 that will leave a lasting impression. You enter an \u2018oenotech\u2019 called the <strong>Heretaunga Studio<\/strong>, a cool, dark space that is fitted out like a 5-star Hotel, to a welcoming karanga by a local Ngati Kahungunu.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-b612c91\" data-id=\"b612c91\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b3c09fd elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b3c09fd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Building the room over 18 months, the idea grew that they would challenge what the \u2018traditional\u2019 wine tasting was. This is more multi-dimensional than walking up to a bar and being presented with a string of wines to try. More like a theatre of wine \u2013 a room specifically created for telling the stories behind the wines. There are barrels in the room, and that is part of the tasting \u2013 to try the wines in development.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-631055b elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"631055b\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-3d5b08a\" data-id=\"3d5b08a\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-74ca18a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"74ca18a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The furniture is made from a Matai tree that was recovered from a river in the South island and created for the room. Even the spittoons next to the seating are made by a local potter using clay from the vineyards in North Canterbury. These things that you can touch and use are all part of the considered experience at play here.<\/p><p>Part of Smith and Sheth is <strong>Steve Smith<\/strong>, a Master of Wine who started Craggy Range with the Peabody family. He met <strong>Brian Sheth<\/strong> in 2012 and they decided later that they wanted to do something together. The idea was whether to do something new, or take on something established. We tried Chardonnays from the barrel, and it is really interesting for visitors to try an \u2018unfinished\u2019 wine \u2013 a 2020 tried in June, is as far from a finished wine as I\u2019ve tried before. One of them is the \u2018funky\u2019 one, and usually a winemaker is happy to show you a wine that\u2019s not too far from being bottled &#8211; but this is raw &#8211; and fascinating. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-1a75427\" data-id=\"1a75427\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-baaf381 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"baaf381\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Tasting some of the wines that were \u2018bought\u2019 into the stable &#8211; two Pinot Noirs from <strong>Pyramid Valley<\/strong>, and a Central Otago one from <strong>Lowburn Ferry<\/strong> \u2013 all small volumes, but crafted in a special way that fits into the &#8216;exceptional wines&#8217; ethos. These are a pleasure to drink, and you\u2019re inspired by the audio-visual to link the land to the wine. The journey through differing terroirs is fascinating \u2013 and you\u2019re accompanied by wines that totally reflect this. These are wines that are made in the vineyard, and so specific to each location, that that is what you get in the glass.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-961e786 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"961e786\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-7c25b29\" data-id=\"7c25b29\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9cd5475 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9cd5475\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The tutorial that you\u2019re exposed to in this session is quite something \u2013 tasting exceptional New Zealand wines, but also putting them in context with the visuals and stories alongside. It\u2019s glib to say that it is rare to taste rare wines.. but it is, by it\u2019s very nature. These are not everyday wines, and this not your common wine tasting. You do get to discover the small percentage difference that really makes these wines special, and apart from the rest.<\/p><p>I\u2019d always recommend to a tourist to go direct to the source, and visit winery Cellar Doors. However, if you only have a short time for one wine-related activity to the region &#8211; your time will be well spent with a visit to the Heretaunga Studio in Havelock North.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Much is made of the taste of wine \u2013 people devote entire careers to this facet;
