Kicking things off with a limited availability Chardonnay that sold out En Primeur and arrived with sensational packaging. You had to hope the wine within was as delicious as the presentation. It was. (https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/?p=1059). David met up with one of the founders &#8211; <strong>Sarah Little<\/strong>, in Havelock North recently; waiting for the sun&#8230;<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-0f78e18 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"0f78e18\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-7231b0a\" data-id=\"7231b0a\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3756224 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3756224\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>WineFolio<\/strong>: So, Helio \u2013 it\u2019s going well?<\/p><p><strong>Sarah Little<\/strong>: Yes, it\u2019s exciting. Mathew and I had talked for a long time about making our own wine; and although we\u2019ve made wines over the years, we\u2019ve never actually got as far as putting a label on it. We\u2019ve never been able to come up with a name that we were happy with! That\u2019s not our fort\u00e9. That&#8217;s where David and Amy came into it, with their background in branding, design and advertising, and that became a nice fit. Mat and David met through the filming of <em>\u2018A Seat at the Table\u2019<\/em> that David produced, and realised, over lunch, that they liked a similar style of wine and talked about potentially doing a project together. So finally we were able to get it off the ground. It\u2019s evolved quite quickly, from talking about it, to actually doing it. The whole process is a collaborative effort.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-dfb0faf elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"dfb0faf\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-8995366\" data-id=\"8995366\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a26845c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a26845c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>WF<\/strong>: Have you got big plans for it, or going to try and keep it manageable?<\/p><p><strong>SL<\/strong>: We would like to keep it on the smaller side. Our \u201919 was four barrels and that sold out within a few weeks. En primeur started in April and it sold out within two months. We\u2019ve increased production for the 2020 Chardonnay so we can share a bit more with the trade. We always planned to do a Pinot Noir for 2020.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-985eb4b\" data-id=\"985eb4b\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a04d040 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a04d040\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>It\u2019s from a pretty special pocket of Martinborough, again the style of Pinot we all like. Getting a little bigger but we want to keep that smaller style. We like to do minimal intervention, let the vineyard and the fruit speak for itself. There are lots of ways to make Chardonnay. We\u2019re going to see how it goes, Helio is about integrity and what\u2019s in the bottle &#8211; so if we think it\u2019s good enough we\u2019ll add the Helio label \u2013 we\u2019re quite liking how it\u2019s looking now, but further down the track we\u2019ll make that decision. Our focus will be Chardonnay and Pinot, with possibly a Syrah. We\u2019re also really excited about our <strong>Tempranillo Ros\u00e9<\/strong>, again the style of Ros\u00e9 we like to drink, light, bright but textural, clich\u00e9 to say but in a southern French style. More than just a bit of left over pinot juice!<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-0b6a469 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"0b6a469\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-08256d8\" data-id=\"08256d8\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-39b8cbe elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"39b8cbe\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Mathew and I have the winemaking and viticulture background; we honed our skills like many young winemakers by travelling and learning as much as we could from as many people as we could.\u00a0I started out based in Central Otago working at <strong>Felton Road<\/strong> in the vineyard before working my way into the winery. We\u2019ve both worked in NZ, Aussie, France &amp; Austria, as well as Canada (for me) and the US and China for Matt, before settling in <strong>Clare SA<\/strong> for a few years (where our first child was born). All up that works out to 14 vintages for me so far before taking some time out to be a mum, and Mathew\u2019s up to well over 20 by now.\u00a0\u00a0We moved back to settle in Hawkes Bay 5 years ago. Our youngest is only ten months old so it\u2019s been a busy few years. It\u2019s been our dream to start our own wine brand that would enable us to do something in the wine industry while still having a family.<\/p><p><strong>Helio<\/strong> has been about family as well \u2013 especially teaming up with David and Amy \u2013 they\u2019ve got two little girls. With our complementary skillsets and both at the same stage family-wise, and that kind of thing.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-3b01264 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"3b01264\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-11ddc33\" data-id=\"11ddc33\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dca8c9f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"dca8c9f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>WF<\/strong>: So I was told about it by a couple of people who suggested I had a look at what you were doing. And I decided I\u2019d buy it \u2013 and when it came through there\u2019s that \u2018first 50\u2019 thing. That\u2019s quite a cool idea, it feels like you\u2019re in a little special club. What are you going to do with that?<\/p><p><strong>SL<\/strong>: COVID put a bit of a dampener on the full idea! David\u2019s idea is to potentially have some kind of a dinner or a party once a year and invite the <strong>First 50 members<\/strong>. To be part of it you have to commit to a 6-pack of wine each year and that\u2019s all. When we\u2019ve got new wines, we\u2019ll let the First 50 know first and they\u2019ll get the chance to buy before anyone else, because we\u2019ll be making small amounts, the First 50 will hopefully be a pretty prized list to be on in years to come.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-6c72695\" data-id=\"6c72695\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dddab51 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"dddab51\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>WF<\/strong>: Did you do something like numbering the bottles? So that if someone\u2019s in the First 50 they always get the same numbers? So I\u2019m always numbers 320-326 \u2013 that\u2019s my numbers.<\/p><p><strong>SL<\/strong>: Ha ha! Sounds like a logistical nightmare!<\/p><p><strong>WF<\/strong> (laughs) and you\u2019re already dipping it in yellow wax..!<\/p><p><strong>SL<\/strong>: Yes, the wax is labour intensive. It\u2019s actually really enjoyable to do. We did work out how many bottles we could do in an hour. About 30 seconds to do a bottle? I love the colour. The first few bottles were probably a bit thin, it took a while to get it right. You\u2019ve got to get the wax to the correct temperature otherwise it can bubble. But, yeah every single bottle is hand waxed and packed by us \u2013 once the kids are asleep!<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-fdb4321 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"fdb4321\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-8c85a37\" data-id=\"8c85a37\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4275b5f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4275b5f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>WF<\/strong>: And you had to re-do all the ones that Mat had done..<\/p><p><strong>SL<\/strong> (laughs) Exactly! Literally, I did have to re-do some. But it\u2019s fun. It\u2019s something a bit different you know. People see it and go \u201cCool, that\u2019s different\u201d.<\/p><p><strong>WF<\/strong>: Yes, people I\u2019ve shown it to have gone <em>\u201cooooh, let\u2019s open that\u201d<\/em> and I\u2019ve said \u201clet\u2019s not\u201d. Obviously I opened one instantly because I wanted to be the first to try it &#8211; of people I knew. And I was blown away by how good it is already. I do think it\u2019s a keeper though, it\u2019s got quite a pure acid line to it.<\/p><p><strong>SL<\/strong>: I think so. We\u2019re excited to see where it goes and how it evolves over the next couple of years. A lot of people have asked us why we went for a cork, and we say that one of the reasons is we really loved the bottle \u2013 the shape of the bottle, with that nice low shoulder. And the corks we\u2019ve used (and paid more for) are triple checked for any taint so we\u2019re pretty confident in the closure.<\/p><p><strong>WF<\/strong>: Did you have any reference points when you were thinking about what you wanted to make?<\/p><p><strong>SL<\/strong>: I think we\u2019ve all been inspired by some of the people that we\u2019ve worked for over the years, or that we know. Whilst there are many great producers we admire, and we\u2019ve been lucky enough to learn from some of them, it\u2019s not so much about emulating what they\u2019ve done, but trying to forge our own path. \u00a0When looking at our first release we did some benchmarking of Helio alongside Chardonnays around the same price point of other NZ producers we admire to make sure we were happy with where we were sitting. One of the ones in New Zealand that Mat, David and I all respect is <strong>Michael Brajkovich<\/strong> at <strong>Kumeu River.<\/strong> I\u2019d say Australia are probably ahead of us in trying to make more restrained styles of Chardonnay \u2013 we\u2019re just catching up. Drinking Burgundy over the years has definitely inspired us as far as Chardonnay goes.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-a173e5d elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"a173e5d\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-5b4a513\" data-id=\"5b4a513\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1bf2c92 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1bf2c92\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>WF<\/strong>: Kumeu River is quite big now production-wise, and now with Rays Road, will be expanding. I\u2019m quite into <strong>Maude<\/strong> as well \u2013 I love their Chardonnay.<\/p><p><strong>SL<\/strong>: Matt and I have both worked there. I was there in 2008, and Mat in 2010, which is the year we met down in Central Otago, so that\u2019s a little connection for us. Sarah-Kate and Dan are good value. It\u2019s cool to see people supporting small producers as well. What\u2019s happened with Coronavirus has been absolutely crazy for the wine industry. Fortunately we could keep making wine throughout \u2013 that was a bit touch and go.\u00a0Our Pinot was picked the day before lockdown. So that was pretty close. During lockdown people were forced to change their buying habits, and we\u2019ve seen people trying to buy direct from the producer, perhaps more so than they had in the past.<\/p><p>At the moment our wine is at Mat\u2019s work but we\u2019re working on our own home for Helio. That\u2019s something we are looking at at the moment.
