Regular readers will know that I keep a close eye on Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and at a recent tasting courtesy of the NZ Sommelier Society in downtown Auckland, there was a chance to get up to date with the range of wines from Spy Valley<\/b> in the Waihopai Valley.<\/p>

Assistant Winemaker, Alessandro Carraro<\/b>, took us through a selection, which naturally included a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc – in the classic style. But he also had a wine that he had made in his first year working at the winery. It is a tradition, apparently, that the winemakers are allowed to \u2018experiment\u2019 with small batches.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Sometimes these join a series of wines from Spy Valley that are normally only available at their Cellar Door in the Waihopai Valley. Most will have tried (and liked, I assume) the \u2018regular\u2019 Spy Valley wines, but wouldn’t have made it down to the Cellar Door and tasted anything as diverse as the Block wines.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

I asked, and was sent, a box to taste through six of these designations in the comfort of my own Tasting Room – with a virtual visit (glass by glass) to theirs. As owner Amanda Johnson said – it\u2019s an \u201copportunity to showcase them beyond cellar door\u201d. So, these are the Spy Valley \u2018Block Series\u2019<\/b> – let me tell you what I thought about them.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

B Block Chardonnay 2025
<\/b>The first one out of the box is a wine made by Alessandro Carraro who hosted the tasting in Auckland. Hand picked in the cool of the mornings, gently pressed off and fermented in stainless steel tank. Aged on light lees for six months in old French oak before blending. The oak touch is very subtle, the overall feel is one of energy and brightness. Lots of citrus both in the bouquet and into the palate. Brimming with zesty acidity, the other main element is a crushed-stone chalkiness, giving plenty of drive and zip through to a mouth-watering finish.<\/p>

C Block Pinot Gris 2025
<\/b>A single vineyard wine, of course, made by Ashley Stage. Skin-contact Pinot Gris – their second pick of Pinot Gris for the harvest, handpicked and went straight into an open top fermenter. This was fermented on skins for 14 days, native yeast and gentle pump overs daily. It was then pressed off and put into a mix of neutral oak and aged on light lees for 6 months until bottling. A coppery amber colour in the glass. Varietal is shown with ginger, pear and spice; winemaking with carrot, satsuma and liquorice. The fruit is tart and there\u2019s a prickly phenolic grip of tannin. Very dry – 1.9 g\/l residual sugar – but quite textural and mouth filling.<\/p>

E Block Sauvignon Blanc 2023
<\/b>Made by Wendy Stuckey. Gentle juice extraction, cold settled and 80% fermented in stainless steel tanks, with 20% in French oak barrels.\u00a0The wine remained on fine yeast lees for 7 months before final blending. A bright, light green colour in the glass. Equally bright fruit aromas of grapefruit, lime, passionfruit and guava rise from that glass. Quite dry – 1.4 g\/l residual sugar – and zesty. A calm assurance into the palate the acidity is well-integrated and whilst there is a nice flow, it\u2019s not a busy wine, with whispers of crushed stone, green herbs and sliced fennel emerging along the way. The back of the palate fills with texture, and the finish has equal parts richness and crispness. An excellent example – one of the best of the year for me.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

F Block Pinot Noir 2019
<\/b>Made by Wendy Stuckey and Emily Gaspard-Clark. Fruit from selected rows in the F Block vineyard was hand-picked and fermented in an open top fermenter before maturing in barrel for 11 months. The bouquet is clearly Pinot Noir, with plenty of toasted spice and ripe fruit in the darker red spectrum – cherry, plum and boysenberry. One of the least \u2018experimental\u2019 in the box, it has what I would call a very \u2018Marlborough Pinot\u2019 character. That\u2019s to say, the fruit is ripe and bright, with an energy and lift that is neither the fruit-led style of further south, or the savoury edge from Martinborough. Quite elegant, with a seamless structure of soft tannin, spicy oak and earthy minerality.<\/p>

N Block Pinot Noir Nouveau 2025
<\/b>Made by Emily Gaspard-Clark. Hand-picked in the cool of the morning and gently destemmed to retain whole berries. Fermented in open-top stainless steel with a small addition of Pinot Noir juice to increase the juice-to-skin ratio. Fermentation was carried out slightly cooler than usual with a highly aromatic yeast. After 21 days on skins, the wine was pressed and settled in tank before being transferred to seasoned French oak barrels. Half the barrels underwent malolactic fermentation, while the others did not, highlighting the acidity. The perfume has a candy shop edge – pink smoko lollies, fruit jellies and pink liquorice. Cranberry, rhubarb and redcurrant fruits. The tannin is supple and the light grip adds interest to the delicate palate.<\/p>

S Block Syrah 2016
<\/b>Made by Paul Bourgeois and Richelle Collier. The Syrah was hand-picked late in the season at full ripeness from the Lodge and Outpost (S) Blocks and fermented in Open Top fermenters. The wine then matured for 5 years in barrel before being blended and bottled for release. Good Syrah wines are a rare find from Marlborough. This one is a properly deep purple colour in the glass, with lashings of red fruit notes in the bouquet. There\u2019s a touch of Christmas spices here too – cinnamon, anise and vanilla, with white pepper and sumac as well. Quite broad and rounded in the palate, with plenty of weight and texture filling it out. Tannin and acidity are very harmonic, and the finish is smooth and rich.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
