The 1998 vintage of Ornellaia was named Wine Spectator&#8217;s No. 1 Wine of the Year (Wine of the Year) in 2001. A couple of friends hold it in very high regard and I\u2019ve tasted very good older vintages &#8211; the 2001 comes to mind. I\u2019ve always had mixed feelings about it though &#8211; for the reason that I don\u2019t think it is a terroir-led wine &#8211; with a real sense of place.<\/p><p>\u2018Super Tuscan\u2019 is the name given to these Italian wines that use varietals like Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, rather than traditional Italian varietals. They are a nightmare to pick in a blind tasting. It is clearly of it\u2019s type &#8211; an italian wine, made from Bordeaux varietals &#8211; and it tastes like that. You can taste that it is Bordeaux in style, but it also has an italian air to it. Now, I like Tuscany wines (Ornellaia is from <b>Bolgheri<\/b> on the Tuscan coast) but I prefer Sangiovese. I think it IS the grape of Tuscany, and I love <b>Chianti<\/b> and <b>Brunello di Montalcino<\/b>.<\/p><p>A Super Tuscan like Ornellaia, is undoubtedly a very fine wine, but I think of it as an \u2018International Wine\u2019. Something that I tie into the whole <b>Robert Parker<\/b> era of red wines, where one critic\u2019s dominance and taste dictated changes across the world, to fit in with that. It was as if all the world\u2019s wines started to taste the same. Suddenly places like <b>Chateau Kirwan<\/b> in Margaux were making a style like Pomerol from across the river. Even first growths like <b>Chateau Mouton Rothschild<\/b> changed tack and became darker, richer and more oak-led &#8211; all things that appealed to Parker.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-dd7a681 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"dd7a681\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-8da0013\" data-id=\"8da0013\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cc39cab elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"cc39cab\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"735\" height=\"474\" src=\"https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Ornellaia-Masterclass-1024x660.jpeg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-14564\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Ornellaia-Masterclass-1024x660.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Ornellaia-Masterclass-300x194.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Ornellaia-Masterclass-768x495.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Ornellaia-Masterclass-1536x991.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Ornellaia-Masterclass.jpeg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 735px) 100vw, 735px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-9add7ae elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"9add7ae\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-163c01a\" data-id=\"163c01a\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ffadfd8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ffadfd8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>It is no co-incidence that another single personality &#8211; wine consultant <b>Michel Rolland<\/b> &#8211; was flying around the globe and having a hand in many of these wines. A good friend of Parker and <b>Robert Mondavi<\/b> in Napa &#8211; he was also on the ground when Ornellaia was being created. Founded by <b>Lodovico Antinori <\/b>&#8211; of the famous Tuscan wine family, Antinori employed Rolland, and then sold part of the share in the venture to the Mondavi family. Through the back door, the whole Estate ended up in the hands of the \u2018other big Tuscan wine family\u2019 &#8211; the <b>Frescobaldi<\/b> family.<\/p><p><b>Opus One<\/b> &#8211; the collaboration between Mondavi and Mouton Rothschild happened around the same time. And on Tuesday this week, I tasted a wine from Argentina &#8211; <b>Yacochuya 2013<\/b>, that was made in conjunction with Michel Rolland, using a blend of Argentina\u2019s cornerstone grape &#8211; Malbec, with some Cabernet Sauvignon. Again, a very nice glass of wine, but something like the <b>Ab Initio &#8220;Finca Scuseria\u201d<\/b> (albeit a straight Malbec) was the wine of the night.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-eaeb664 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"eaeb664\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-10f6191\" data-id=\"10f6191\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cb87f11 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"cb87f11\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"735\" height=\"404\" src=\"https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Argentina-tasting-1024x563.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-14563\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Argentina-tasting-1024x563.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Argentina-tasting-300x165.jpg 300w, https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Argentina-tasting-768x422.jpg 768w, https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Argentina-tasting-1536x845.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/winefolio.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Argentina-tasting.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 735px) 100vw, 735px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-5f94735 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"5f94735\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-f482580\" data-id=\"f482580\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0dbe1c8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0dbe1c8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>At the Ornellaia Masterclass the <b>Ornellaia 2016 \u2018La Tensione\u2019<\/b> really stood out. A wine with poise and elegance, but also a lift of energy, juiciness and velvet texture. I would score that 96\/100, which would make it one of the best wines I will taste this year.<\/p><p>So, I am obviously saying that these are very good wines, but I find their polish and lack of self-identity an issue. If I compare Ornellaia to something like <b>Pichon Lalande Comtesse<\/b>, I prefer the French wine. If I compare Ornellaia to <b>Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello<\/b>, I prefer the Brunello &#8211; and so on. I think I also object to the whole \u2018uniformity of style\u2019 that came to pass during the time when Robert Parker was the most powerful voice in the world of wine.
