I had more than a few discussions amongst people in the wine business over the last couple of years – about what customers really want to be drinking these days – especially younger consumers. Amongst the \u2018drinking less but drinking better\u2019 comments have been remarks that the market has moved towards \u201cimmediate wines\u201d. White wines with energy and lift, but also lighter reds that will drink well now – not requiring a decade of cellaring. Or – see below, chilled reds?<\/p>\n
A Pinot Noir from The Graduates – a collaborative wine project started by three young winemakers who met while studying. Made from hand-picked grapes in the Lake Ferry Road Vineyard, Martinborough. Served slightly chilled, it is a vibrant ruby red colour in the glass. At first it is strawberry, redcurrant and raspberry fruits, but there is also the cherry so typical of the variety, and a touch of smoky dried spices. Crunchy, bright and juicy to taste, with enough structure from fine tannin and zesty acidity to frame the fruit. As it warms there is a touch of earthy savouriness and a smooth texture develops nicely. Very drinkable (smashable?) and this \u2018nouveau\u2019 style could become quite the trend. 88pts<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
