The theme? <i>The road less travelled<\/i> \u2014 and it delivered. Cambridge Road winemaker Lance Redgwell brought the wild and wonderful wines, while chef Lisa Lee matched them with next-level Korean-inspired dishes. Think: food you\u2019ve definitely never seen on your average brunch menu.<\/p><p>Acorn jelly salad? Check. Chicken Wanja meatballs with pear pur\u00e9e? Absolutely. Spicy Jeyuk Ssambap wrapped in perilla leaves? Don\u2019t even ask &#8211; just eat. Every plate was a delight, and honestly, even our token \u201cI\u2019ve eaten everywhere\u201d foodie friend had to admit: this was uncharted territory.<\/p><p>The setup? A long table, every seat taken, fireplace lit, food and wine served family-style. No pretentious \u2018degustation menu\u2019 vibes &#8211; just people passing plates, pouring wine, and bonding over the magic happening on the table. Cue glass noodles with a herby mustard dressing, slippery, chewy and addictive. Crispy pancakes (shrimp or tofu), juicy skewered meatballs laced with garlic and ginger. And then the wild card: <i>Cloudwalker 2023<\/i>, an orange wine that\u2019s a bit of a rebel &#8211; fuzzy tannins, peachy stonefruit, baking spice, and just the right amount of edge. Not everyone &#8220;gets&#8221; orange wine, but this one is out to convert. Spoiler: it did.<\/p><p>Then Lance stood up and told us about fairy dust on the vines (yes, really). Enter <i>Crystal Veil 2023<\/i>, a Sauvignon Blanc aged in Totara wood &#8211; basically the most Aotearoa wine ever. Textured, green, savoury, soulful. No basic \u2018plain square label\u2019 branding here &#8211; each bottle is pure aesthetic. Watercolours, indie-artist energy, and one (<i>Stargazer 2022<\/i>) that heads into funky boutique craft beer territory. If you\u2019re buying wine based on the look (and let\u2019s be honest, we all have), these bottles will leap into your basket.<\/p><p>The final lap featured the big reds &#8211; and the big flavours. Hand-cut Yukhoe tartare (Korean steak tartare) and pork stir-fry with some solid heat. The wine? <i>Dovetail 2020<\/i>, Cambridge Road\u2019s signature blend of Pinot Noir and Syrah. Smoky, plush, with dark fruit and just a whisper of spice. Bold food, bold wine &#8211; the pairing was as extra as it needed to be.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-1e2fed5 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"1e2fed5\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-6e8c059\" data-id=\"6e8c059\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4c0fe4f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4c0fe4f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Every Jervois Supper Club has been an evening well spent, but this one felt special &#8211; like a trip somewhere unexpected, without leaving the city. It\u2019s also a reminder of how much flavour and creativity is bubbling up in Aotearoa\u2019s food and wine scene.
