What I think should be on your festive table this year (or on your Santa List!)<\/p>

We\u2019re already one week deep into December! I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever written the annual \u2018Christmas Cracker\u2019 so late in the year. This is my list of what could be in your shopping basket and on the table for the summer break. These will all be New Zealand wines and I\u2019ve not picked anything that will blow the budget, but I have been looking back at the wines that I\u2019ve tasted in 2024 – with as tight a budget as I can think of. There will be a separate list coming on WineFolio where I talk about the very best wines<\/i><\/b> that have crossed my path this year, but for now we\u2019re not trying to break the credit card. Read on.<\/p>

With a little planning, or even a bit of advice from the internet (ahem) your holiday lineup of wines could be looking as amazing as your Christmas jumper or your neighbours Xmas lights. Some of these wines might be good on the table on the 25th alongside the turkey; or for taking over to your best mate\u2019s bach whilst he\u2019s away in the South of France. And one or two should definitely be on your Santa list \u2013 whether you\u2019ve been naughty or nice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

So, lets\u2019 start with those bubbles. It\u2019s vital to have something sparkling at Christmas. It\u2019s not always the easiest choice to make, but here are a couple of ideas for you.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

#1 No.1 M\u00e9thode Traditionelle Cuv\u00e9e<\/b>. Reviewed at the end of November, I gave this NZ M\u00e9thode a 94\/100 score. \u201cThe bouquet has a burst of yeasty autolysis and is sufficiently complex that you\u2019d think it came from Champagne. A really fine example of New Zealand (and Marlborough) sparkling\u201d. $40-ish<\/b><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

#2 Balvonie M\u00e9thode Traditionelle Prosecco 2023 <\/b>Not quite as crazy as you\u2019d think – a Prosecco from Marlborough, and not only that, but it is vintage and M\u00e9thode! \u201cBrimming with energy and crisp, clean flavours\u201d I gave it 92\/100 less than a week ago. $35<\/b><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Ros\u00e9 is a great choice for the Christmas table. All of the wines in the next four positions on the list are from Top 10 tastings that I hosted this year. Three whites, with a pink thrown in the mix.<\/p>

#3 Askerne S\u00e9rieux Ros\u00e9<\/b>\u00a0We did a Top 10 tasting of ros\u00e9 earlier this year, and the winner of that tasting costs was this wine.\u201cA bright, taut, dry style, but with creamy texture adding balance – subtle with a dry, long finish\u201d $25<\/b><\/b><\/p>

#4 Tohu Pinot Gris 2023<\/b>. I also hosted a Top 10 Tasting of Pinot Gris – in April. This wasn\u2019t the winner but it is \u201cUndeniably juicy and ripe, but with that note of \u2018good, green bitters\u2019 and phenolics that we like. Generous (with good weight) and plush, but spicy and dry. well under $20<\/b><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

#5 Ahi Ka Blackmore Sauvignon Blanc 2024 <\/b>I have a lot of time for Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc – and this was one of the best this year. \u201cVibrant and energetic, with a highline of acidity that borders on saline\u201d.under $25<\/b><\/p>

#6 Lake Chalice \u2018The Raptor\u2019 Chardonnay 2022<\/b> is the sibling wine to the Sauvignon Blanc that won the Top 10 Tasting of that varietal. \u201cA bold, in-your-face style, with great juice and bright acidity\u201d. I listed a few \u2018Best Buy\u2019 wines after the Top 10 list this time – under the $25 mark<\/strong>.<\/p>

#7 Bryterlater \u2018Svelte\u2019 Riesling 2023 <\/b>We critics love riesling! It\u2019s hard to sell it though apparently. \u201cThe palate is tightly structured and basically dry, but there is a ripe fruit sweetness that adds contrast and balance\u201d This was 94\/100 in June. $33-ish<\/b><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Great red wines at lower price points can be a problem to recommend; but looking at the Gold Medal winners from the shows and my own tastings this year, it certainly feels like there is very good wine at sharp prices if you buy carefully. I have no problem recommending these last three\u2026<\/i><\/p>

#8 Church Road \u2018McDonald Series\u2019 Merlot 2021 <\/b>Winning the Trophy for \u2018Champion Merlot & Predominant Blends\u2019 at the New Zealand International Wine Show this year – this label constantly gives bang for your buck. $30 & under<\/b><\/b><\/p>

#9 St Clair \u2018Pioneer Block 17\u2019 Cabernet Merlot 2021 <\/b>is <\/b>from this very consistent Marlborough producer but with fruit <\/b>grown in the Gimblett Gravels sub-district of Hawke\u2019s Bay where they have vineyards. A well-balanced spine of tannin, oak and acidity. $35<\/b><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

#10 Paritua Stone Paddock Scarlet 2019<\/b> A delicious \u2018Bordeaux Blend\u2019 wine that didn\u2019t quite make the Top 10 list in the June Tasting. A smoky, characterful red led by Cabernet Franc – from an excellent vintage. under $25<\/b><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
